Round-up: 2021
Following the near total cancellation of its 2020 fixtures, WIGS was delighted that 80% of its programme was played in 2021, notwithstanding the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Although the overall season results were mixed, WIGS was able to build on the Prince Arthur trophy success by retaining the Phillips Cup against IGS at Worplesdon GC and the Graeme King trophy against Lloyd's GS at West Sussex GC. Both games were played in superb weather, the courses were well set up and the hospitality excellent.
The winner of the only internal competition played - the Neave Trophy played at the New Zealand GC in the early season - was Bob Beckett (pictured receiving the trophy from the Master at Common Hall) with a magnificent 42 points followed by Nick Smith (41) who was the winner of the Hart Salver.
Captain Ian Jerrum was supported by Muir Stratford and the committee and all worked very hard to ensure all playing members enjoyed their days out and in turn have much appreciated the support they received from them.
As always WIGS will be delighted to welcome new members who are interested in playing some excellent golf courses around the Home Counties
WIGS golfers triumph in inter-Livery competition
August 2021 The WCI golfing society (WIGS) swept to victory in the Prince Arthur Cup which is competed for annually by the Livery Companies of London in a foursomes golf tournament. It is the largest one day, two course amateur event in the UK and was first held in 1927 at Walton Heath where it is still held today.
As there are 110 Livery Companies, golf course limitations mean only 54 teams can compete in any one year which means 216 players in all participate but to aid the competitive spirit, the 12 lowest scoring teams retire each year to be replaced by new competitors the following year.
This year’s team (pictured left to right) was made up of Michael Yardley, Ian Chippendale (Team Captain), David Martin and Paul Hosking, pictured with Sarah Adams-Diffey, Master of the Coachworkers Company, who presented the trophy. Paul Hosking also played in the previous winning Insurers side of 2007
The winning margin was a very impressive six holes and this second win propels the Insurers into the top five of the winning Livery companies for this trophy.
WIGS Captain’s Day Success
June 2021 WIGS held its Captain’s Day meeting this year at Effingham Golf Club, hosted and organised by Captain Ian Jerrum and attended by a good number of members and guests.
It was an excellent day with the course in great condition, the lunch first class and Ian's generous hospitality very much appreciated by all as he provided the prizes.
Winners of the main 4BBB competition were Mike Yardley and Bill Bower with a magnificent 46 points closely followed by Andy Bye and Dennis Culligan with 44 points.
Mike Yardley collected the prize for the best individual score and Artur Niemczewski and Steve Williams were successful with their nearest the pin shots.
