Master's Series focuses on climate change
Written by David Worsfold on 09th August 2021
The next briefing in our successful Master's Series will focus on climate change. This follows a very successful briefing last month which looked the issues facing the insurance industry as it tackles the ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) agenda.
For the first event Senior Warden, Nick Dunlop, was joined by Simon Konsta, Senior Partner at Clyde & Co, David Hoile, Senior Director of Investment Research at Willis Towers Watson and Stefan Claus from the Bank of England. The panel set out for the 50 members joining this virtual event what ESG is and why boards of companies must give it their full attention.
At the next briefing for members on 10 September the focus will firmly be on the 'E' part of that agenda. Dr Rhian-Mari Thomas, CEO of the Green Finance Institute who is one of the most influential figures in this debate and Dominic Christian, Executive Chairman of Aon Benfield International and the Chair of ClimateWise, a major industry group bringing insurers together to help tackle climate change.
"This is an issue that the insurance industry cannot ignore, particularly when we have such a pivotal role to play in developing solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges. The expectation will be for insurers to increase our positive contribution to the environment and society while Investors, lenders, customers, employees and governments all demand that we invest in environmentally acceptable ways. As a livery company we are working closely with the Lord Mayor and the City of London Corporation to highlight the contribution insurance can make in meeting these pressing objectives", said Master David Sales.
"This event comes at an opportune time. Dr Thomas will offer her unique insights into the preparations for COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference being hosted by the UK in November. The conference is expected to be a major game changer for the City and our industry, with ESG concerns at the top of the agenda. Dominic will provide an update on the collective action being taken by the insurance industry and how WCI members can become more involved in this debate."
