How did we end up in insurance? Most of us by accident! But what do we all need to do to get young people interested in insurance as a career option rather than a default option? With only 4% of students considering insurance as a worthwhile career option, what can we all do to get in front of them to show them what we can offer?

Half of those currently employed will be retired in the next 15 years alone and yet just 25% of the industry is under the age of 35 according to the CII.

We have an urgent need for new talent to join. This means it is important to engage with young people and show them that a career in our sector can be just as worthwhile, well-paid and interesting as other sectors that are more popular.

A key pillar for the Worshipful Company of Insurers is education, recognising the challenge our profession faces we are delighted to host this very special online event  to help examine what the issues are, and, more importantly, identify what we can all do to change things.

Attendance is open to anyone – WCI members, CII members, HR professionals and the CII’s network of local institutes.

Please do join us at 9am on 11 December ... and let's start to meet this challenge together

Arrangements

There will be three speakers, bringing their valuable perspectives to the discussion.

Martyn Mathews, MD of broker SSP, who spoke passionately at the CII Conference in October and looked at the growing disconnect between companies increasing demand for skilled talent and the limited availability of qualified workers. He will look at how the industry can collaborate and work harder to shape the future of talent acquisition.

Nick Brook, CEO of Speakers for Schools.  Our own liveryman Branko Bjelobaba, is a passionate advocate for the country’s largest social mobility charity, Speakers for Schools (SfS). They work with the majority of state secondary schools (there are over 4,000) and has spoken at many of them over the last 7 years. He is surprised that whilst the charity has strong links with over 1,300 employers, the insurance sector is very under represented. SfS want to allow these schools access to all of us who are able to provide work experience and thus show how great a career in insurance can be. Nick will explain what they are doing to help a huge number of employers reach out to their next new members of staff.

Harriet Miller, a recent joiner to the insurance industry who will explain why she joined, how it has been for her and what she thinks can be done to secure new talent.

There will be time for questions and discussion.
