Pancake Race 2016
SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE RACE - close but no pancake!
The Master, ably assisted by his Clerk, corralled a team of pancake tossing enthusiasts in Guildhall Yard, to compete in the 12th Inter Livery Pancake Race – Tuesday 9th February.
The tension mounted as the cannon sounded (thanks to the Gunmakers Company) and the heats began - first the Master, then Liveryman, Liveryman (ladies), and finally our jolly sailor in the Novelty Race. We must have been second or third in every race but were just pipped at the post each time – so close, but no pancake! (The ‘Victor Ludorum’ Prize went to ‘The Old Bailey’.)
There were some excellent costumes and after the racing everyone retired to hot soup and goulash in the Crypt of Guildhall – free mugs, aprons and happy memories – there is always next year as they say!
Many thanks to the event organisers-The Worshipful Company of Poulters in collaboration with the ‘Cook & The Butler’.
